Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said at the end of the season that top priority was fixing the team’s moribund offense for 2026.
The Pirates took the first step in that process on Thursday night by making a five-player trade with the Boston Red Sox. The key player coming back to the Pirates is outfield prosect Jhostynxon “The Password” García.
The Pirates send right-hander Johan Oviedo to the Red Sox along with two prospects, left-handed reliever Tyler Samaneigo and catcher Adonys Garcia. The Pirates also get right-handed pitching prospect Jesu Travieso.
Garcia, 22, made his major-league debut this year, playing five games for the Red Sox. The right-handed hitter went 1 for 7 with one double, two walks and five strikeouts. Garcia also hit a combined .267/.340/.467 with 21 home runs in 114 games with Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland.
The Venezuelan made his professional debut in 2021 and, in five minor league seasons, had a .261/.351/.465 slash line, 55 homers and 42 stolen bases in 370 games. Baseball America ranks him as the Red Sox’s No. 6 prospect. The Pirates were last in MLB in runs scored last season as well as home runs and OPS.
Travieso, 18, also from Venezuela, is just 5-foot-11 and 140 pounds. He was 3-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) combined this past season with Low-A Fort Myers and the Florida Complex League Red Sox.
Oviedo, 27, made his season debut on Aug. 4 this year after missing the 2023 season while rehabbing from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. He had a 2-1 record with a 3.57 ERA in nine starts. In 81 games (67 starts) during his five-year major-league career, Oviedo is 15-26 with a 4.24 ERA.
Samaniego was placed on the Pirates’ 40-man roster last month after going 3-1 with three saves and a 3.99 ERA in 30 combined games at four levels of the minor leagues. He finished the season with Double-A Altoona. The 26-year-old Samaniego was the Pirates’ 15th-round draft pick in 2021 from South Alabama.
Guzman turned 22 on Thursday. The Pirates drafted him in the fifth round this year from the University of Arizona and he appeared in one game with Low-A Bradenton, going 2 for 5 with one run and two RBIs. For Arizona this past season, he hit .328/.411/.496 with nine homers in 62 games.
