While it might be too soon to say that the Pittsburgh Pirates have a pitching surplus, they definitely have a growing stable of impressive arms, and that goes beyond Paul Skenes.
In fact, the Pirates have gotten to a point where they may be able to trade an arm in exchange for a bat to bolster their miserable offense, and one pitcher in particular has apparently been drawing significant trade interest: Johan Oviedo.
Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic have revealed that teams have already checked in on Oviedo this offseason, but Pittsburgh does not seem overly inclined to move him.
"Oviedo, 27, underwent Tommy John surgery in December 2023, then suffered a right lat strain in the spring of ’25 that delayed his return until Aug. 4. But he posted a 3.57 ERA in nine starts down the stretch, emerging as something of an analytical darling," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote.
Oviedo broke into the big leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals back in 2020 and spent two-and-a-half years with the Cardinals before being traded to the Pirates in August 2022.

During Oviedo's first full season in Pittsburgh in 2023, he went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA while allowing 161 hits and registering 158 strikeouts over 177.2 innings of work. The right-hander struggled with his control, hitting 13 batters and issuing 83 walks.
Control continued to be an issue for Oviedo in 2025, as he handed out 23 free passes across 40.1 frames. His strikeout rate improved, however, as he posted 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
Teams appear to like a lot of things about the 6-foot-6, 275-pounder hurler, but the Bucs have the same affinity for him.
"Of course, Oviedo appeals to the Pirates for all those reasons as well, so they aren’t eager to trade him," Rosenthal and Sammon added. "Still, he is one of the starters they would entertain moving for the right position-player return."
Pittsburgh general manager Ben Cherington said that the club will be trying to spend more money to improve its lineup this winter, and we have already heard that the Pirates are interested in free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber.
Whether or not Pittsburgh actually makes any major moves remains to be seen, but the Buccos are definitely a team to watch in the coming weeks.
