The Boston Red Sox have a surplus of outfielders, and the Pittsburgh Pirates need hitters.

That is why a large segment of Pirates fans are clamoring for general manager Ben Cherington to trade for Jarren Duran. His blend of power and speed would fit neatly with the Pirates, who finished last in MLB in runs scored and home runs this year.

Duran had a solid 2025 season, hitting .256/.332/.442 with 16 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and an American League-leading 13 triples in 157 games in helping the Red Sox reach the postseason for the first time since 2021.

He was also outstanding in the field with 11 defensive runs saved as a left fielder. Duran can also play center field, and that's the position he would likely play on opening day next season if he were still with the Red Sox.

That came after the left-handed-hitting Duran had a breakout season the previous year, batting .285/.342/.492 with 21 homers and 34 stolen bases in 160 games while topping the AL with 48 doubles and 14 triples. He was also the MVP of the All-Star Game.

The 29-year-old cannot become a free agent until 2028. Though eligible for salary arbitration, Duran is already signed for next season at $8 million.

What would it take to get Duran? Industry sources say a lot, even though the Red Sox have an outfield logjam.

The Red Sox need starting pitching, and right-hander Braxton Ashcraft would be a starting point in trade talks. Teams love Ashcraft's stuff, competitiveness, and the six years of contractual control they would have with him.

The Red Sox could also use a third baseman, so they can move Marcelo Mayer to second base. The Pirates could offer Jared Triolo. Though Triolo might never hit for the type of power associated with a third baseman, he is a Gold Glove fielder.

A potential throw-in to the deal could be left-handed reliever Evan Sisk, whom the Pirates acquired at this year's trade deadline from the Kansas City Royals for lefty Bailey Falter. The Red Sox are short on lefty help in the bullpen beyond closer Aroldis Chapman.

It would be difficult to give up Ashcraft in a trade, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that he is probably going to be the chip that lands an impact hitter. Trading him for three years of Duran would be a gamble, but a risk the offensively starved Pirates would need to make.
