The Cincinnati Reds are probably not going to trade starting pitcher Nick Lodolo this offseason. His name has been mentioned in trade ideas at times, however. If Cincinnati is even considering moving on from him, the ball club should instantly shut the trade idea down.
The only argument for trading the 27-year-old is the fact that he is only under team control through the 2027 season. Moving on from him this offseason would allow Cincinnati to receive a strong trade return given the multiple years remaining on his deal.
This Reds ball club competed in 2025, though. It isn't as if they are rebuilding. Lodolo, meanwhile, is potentially on the verge of a true breakout season.
In 2025, the left-handed starter pitched to a 3.33 ERA across 29 outings while striking out 156 hitters. He recorded 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings and had two complete games -- including one shutout.
Nick Lodolo has always featured a high ceiling. He is only getting better. It would not be surprising to see Lodolo take the next step forward and become an All-Star in 2026. In fact, he may even earn Cy Young consideration if he can stay healthy.
Trading him now would feel like giving up far too soon. If anything, the Reds should approach him about a possible contract extension.
Hunter Greene is the ace of the starting rotation. Greene is under contract through 2028, and he also has a club option for the 2029 season. If Lodolo lives up to his potential, Greene and Lodolo could become one of the best starting pitching duos in the entire sport.
Greene has been discussed in trade rumors, but Cincinnati likely won't move on from him given his contract. Similarly to Lodolo, the Reds should instantly shut the thought down if the idea even begins to seem enticing.
Pitching is the Reds' strength. They are a couple of bats away from becoming a legitimate contender in the National League Central. Upgrading the lineup should be the priority -- not rebuilding the pitching rotation.
The Reds are currently in the process of preparing for spring training. A Lodolo trade seems unlikely, but it will still be a situation to monitor.
The Reds can avoid a potentially massive mistake by not trading the southpaw this offseason.
