Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore officially ruled out running back Alvin Kamara for the team’s crucial Week 15 matchup against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday. The announcement came Friday, confirming Kamara will miss his third consecutive game as he continues to recover from a knee/ankle injury.
The news was expected, as the veteran running back did not participate in practice throughout the week. Kamara's continued absence removes one of the Saints' top offensive weapons for this NFC South divisional clash.
With Kamara sidelined, the Saints’ backfield duties will once again fall primarily to rookie running back Devin Neal. The sixth-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft has capably handled the workload in Kamara’s previous two absences, including a standout performance in New Orleans' upset victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.
"Alvin will be out with the knee/ankle and [Offensive Tackle] Asim Richards will be out with the ankle," Moore stated during his Friday press conference, officially providing the team's final injury update. "Justin Reid will be questionable with the knee. Everyone else is good to go."
Neal, who has shown promise in his limited time as the lead back, totaled 70 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored his first career NFL touchdown against the Buccaneers. His ability to produce against a formidable Tampa Bay defense gives the Saints confidence heading into the game against the Panthers.
Kamara's value extends far beyond the running game. He is not only a key factor in the running back core but also a vital component of the Saints’ aerial attack, especially in the screen game and on high-leverage downs. Through 11 games this season, the 30-year-old had tallied 657 total yards (471 rushing, 186 receiving) and one touchdown. His extended absence poses a significant challenge for an offense that has relied heavily on his versatility.
The Saints enter Sunday riding the momentum of their Week 14 win, but facing the Panthers at home without their established backfield playmaker will test the creativity of Coach Moore's play-calling and the execution of the younger players. Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will need to lean heavily on the offensive line and receivers to navigate the tough divisional matchup.
