The New York Knicks had a case to be considered the best team in the NBA after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup Finals. After coming up short in the Eastern Conference Finals in the year prior, the Knicks were starting to see not just their stars play well, but their bench players get incorporated.
However, it's been a step fall for them since then, having a 2-9 stretch from the end of December through January, and they were finally able to halt their losing streak before it reached five-games when they defeated the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, one win doesn't solve everything for the Knicks.
Through his first 30 games of the season, Brunson was looking like a legit MVP candidate, something that hasn't been seen in New York for a long time. Posting averages of 29.4 points and 6.6 assists, he had the Knicks at a 22-8 record. But when the ship starts to sink, Brunson is also the player who needs to bring it back up.
After the win on Wednesday, Brunson was asked about what it took for the team to get back in the win column.
"We just had to refocus and get back to who we are. This is good stuff for us, but we got to continue to press the issue of getting better every single day," Brunson said.
Before winning on Wednesday, it had been almost 10 days since their last win, which came on January 11th on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers. Furthermore, the team hasn't put together back-to-back wins since defeating the New Orleans Pelicans and Atlanta Hawks at the end of 2025.
"Just sticking together, talking it through, having each other's backs, worrying about the little things on the court," Brunson said on what the key was to refocusing. "Not just the stats and all the other stuff, but the stuff that doesn't make the stat sheet. The stuff that actually makes a difference in a close game, and that can break teams."
Suffering decisive defeats to both the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks during their losing streak, it was clear the Knicks weren't in the right headspace, being outplayed by inferior opponents.
Looking ahead, though, the schedule has a mix of challenges and contests that should go in New York's favor. On Saturday, they'll face the Philadelphia 76ers yet again, losing in their past contest but this time coming on the road in Philadelphia. A win could go a long way for the Knicks and help overcome these recent struggles.
