Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have found themselves in the most unenviable position in all of sports. They have accomplished everything they possibly could except winning the National Championship.
So, as they enter the 2026 season, what should Ducks fans' expectations be, and are they fair?
The answer to both of those is simple: Championship or bust, and yes, it is absolutely fair.
Like it or not, the Indiana Hoosiers changed the way college football programs are viewed these days. Similar to when Steph Curry changed the way basketball is played, and Patrick Mahomes changed the way the quarterback position is played, the Hoosiers changed the way coaching college teams is viewed.
The reality is that head coach Dan Lanning, with access to unlimited resources, facilities, fan base, and the tools to recruit anyone anywhere, was unceremoniously passed up by Curt Cignetti.
Cignetti and the Hoosiers turned the worst program in America around in just two years, and to get to the top of the mountain, they disposed of Oregon in blowout fashion.

The problem is, Oregon fans pretty much reserve the right to not care about anything from September through December because it doesn't much matter. The Ducks need to just do whatever it takes to get to the College Football Playoff, and then the expectation is to win.
A really good motto for the Ducks heading into 2026 could be "Just Do It."
I can't take credit for this one as it comes from Josh Pate, but it's a tough reality. Dan Lanning is a great coach, the program is in a great spot, but where it is at is not good enough, especially right now.
Lanning's timeline got sped up about five years, thanks to Curt Cignetti's Hoosiers last year, and that's now the world that he must operate in. An 11-plus-win season and a Playoff run will simply not be good enough for Oregon.
The only thing that is good enough is winning the National Championship. All the Ducks have to do is do it.
