Jeremy Sochan To Sign With Knicks After Being Waived by Spurs cover image

Jeremy Sochan is New York bound after being waived by the San Antonio Spurs.

Jeremy Sochan was waived by the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, ending his time with the team after four seasons.

Sochan was drafted ninth overall by the Spurs in 2022. In 212 games with the team, he averaged 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.

Once he's officially free, according to ESPN's Sham Charania, Sochan plans to sign with the New York Knicks.

This season has been a tough one for Sochan as he's played in 28 games, averaging 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and one assist.

He's received DNPs in 14 games this year. He's played less than seven minutes combined since January 17th, whether he did not play or went into the game as inactive.

New York Knicks Pre-Deadline Interest

The Spurs reportedly looked to move Sochan ahead of the trade deadline, but no deal materialized.

According to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, the Knicks had trade interest in Sochan ahead of the deadline.

The Knicks do have an open roster spot, paving the way for them to sign Sochan when he's officially available after clearing waivers.

While New York did not acquire Sochan at the deadline, they did make a big move in acquiring Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans for Dalen Terry and two future second-round picks.

Sochan Fit In New York

The Knicks are 10-2 in their last 12 games, losing to the Detroit Pistons in a game where they were shorthanded, and dropping an overtime contest to the Indiana Pacers.

The Knicks' defense has started to round into form after a rough December and January. The addition of Alvarado has already improved their point of attack defense as he is a pesky and active on-ball defender.

Sochan is a versatile defender who can guard one through five. He had to play the center position at times for the Spurs last season after Victor Wembanyama was shut down due to a blood clot.

Offensively, he's never been a great shooter from deep, but he is an efficient shooter who cuts smartly and sets himself up for easy shots. He had a 56% effective field goal percentage last season, taking 54% of his shots at the rim.

He showed improvement in each of his first three seasons despite being put in a tough spot early in his career when he was asked to be the lead point guard while not having proper point guard skills.

The Knicks have enough spacing to make Sochan useful as a screen and defender, and his defensive ability should take pressure off of everyone he shares the court with.
