The Red Bull Ring is a fan favorite track, but what makes it so special?
Track details
The Red Bull Ring, located in Spielberg, Styria, Austria, is considered one of the fastest and most power-sensitive tracks on the F1 calendar. The track is 2.688 miles (4.318km) long and has ten turns, eight rights, and two lefts. The race distance is 71 laps, totaling 190.420 miles (306.452km), with an elevation change of 213.255 feet (65 meters).
The lap begins with a half mile long straight, 930 meters to be exact, into Turn 1. Turn 1, also known as the Niki Lauda Kurve, is a tight, uphill, right hand turn that requires the drivers to be precise in their braking, making it a great spot for overtaking. Another spot prime for overtaking is at Turn 3. This turn is a hairpin, making it the slowest corner of the track, forcing the drivers to brake heavily after a high speed crest.
The Turn 4, Rauch Kurve, is a tricky turn with a blind entry, making it easy for driver error with many people running off into the gravel. Because of a significant margin or error at Turn 4, it is yet another spot great for potential overtaking. Turns 6 and 7, as well as 9 and 10 are all high speed corners where high speed stability is crucial.
Another thing that makes this track more difficult is its altitude. It sits around 2297 feet (700 meters) above sea level, which reduces air density and affects the power unit cooling and aerodynamic efficiency. This, combined with the hot temperatures expected at the track, will likely lead to new strategies being used.
