Tuesday would be Gage Jump's regular day to pitch, and instead of pushing him back, the A's are throwing him right into the fray against the Seattle Mariners.
This is a shrewd move by the A's, since the Mariners are one of the worst teams in baseball against left-handed pitching. They rank 27th in wRC+ this season with a 76 (100 is league average), while the Padres, Rangers and Rockies all trail slightly behind.
As Martín Gallegos noted, Luis Severino will be pushed back. He was the scheduled starter for Tuesday's game when the series began, but with lefty Jeffrey Springs slated to start on Wednesday, perhaps the A's look to push Severino back to Friday to start against his former team, the New York Yankees.
Not only would this set up the A's well with two lefties against the Mariners, but Severino typically pitches with more of an edge in bigger games, and facing his former team would be on that list.
Last season he made two starts against them, holding a 15.26 ERA, but in his start at Yankee Stadium earlier this season he went five innings and gave up two runs.
We should know more about the A's rotation plans, and the extent of Aaron Civale's injury this afternoon.
