After rallying from a three games to two deficit against the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series, the Toronto Blue Jays were on the wrong side of baseball history in their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Toronto held a 3-2 series lead, only to lose both games six and seven at home at Rogers Centre. They were both agonizing losses, with the Jays squandering a ninth-inning scoring chance in both contests.
Per @StatsCentre on social media:
Teams up 3-2 that Gms 6-7 of a #WorldSeries at home:
#BlueJays (2025 vs LAD)
Astros (2019 vs WSH)
Cleveland ('16 vs CHC)
Orioles ('79 vs BAL)
Cardinals ('68 vs DET)
Milwaukee Braves ('58 vs NYY)
Brooklyn Dodgers ('52 vs NYY)
Tigers ('34 vs STL)
Yankees ('26 vs STL)
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Jays had runners at second and third with one out. Andres Gimenez hit a sinking liner to left field, which was caught by Enrique Hernandez, who doubled off Addison Barger, who had strayed too far from second base.
The Jays had a 3-0 lead in this one, and then a 4-2 lead, but couldn't hold either. They surrendered a home run to the No. 9 hitter in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game and then gave up a homer to Will Smith in the 11th.
Toronto was 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position, and they had first and third with one out in the 11th, only to end the game on a game-ending double play.
Now, sadly, it's onto the offseason for the Jays, who will start the process of trying to get back to the World Series in 2026. They'll have questions to answer on the pitching front, with Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber and Chris Bassitt all scheduled to be free agents.
They'll also have a question with Bo Bichette, who is headed for free agency as well. He has said he wants to return to Toronto, the only organization he's ever known.
