The Toronto Blue Jays are one win away from their first World Series championship since 1993, and they'll have two more chances to add another banner from the rafters of the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series against the Los Angeles Dodgers after a 6-1 win on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Toronto's first crack at putting away the defending World Series champions will be in Game 6 at 8 p.m. ET on Friday at Rogers Centre.
Whether Toronto does win its third World Series title in franchise history or Los Angeles finds a way to win its second-straight championship, this year was as good of a statement from the Blue Jays franchise and front office that the team is here to stay in the AL picture.
For years Toronto fans grew frustrated at the franchise. In the 2023-24 offseason, the Blue Jays were reportedly in the mix for defending National League MVP Shohei Ohtani before he eventually landed with the Dodgers. The Blue Jays finished last in the American League East in 2024 with a 74-88 record.
This past offseason, Toronto was rumored to be in the mix for superstar outfielder Juan Soto and high-end starting pitcher Corbin Burnes. They signed with the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks, respectively.
The Blue Jays hunkered down and signed superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a 14-year, $500 million contract extension and brought in starting pitchers Shane Bieber via trade at the deadline and Max Scherzer on a one-year, $15.5 million contract, respectively.
Toronto improved and finished the regular season with a 94-68 record and the No. 1 seed in the American League going into the playoffs.
In a recent episode of the Refuse to Lose podcast with Roundtable Sports' Brady Farkas, NESN host/announcer Tom Caron shared his belief that the Blue Jays' window for contention in the AL has only just begun.
"One of the scariest developments in baseball this year was the Toronto Blue Jays woke up and decided they're a big-market team," Caron said on the podcast. "And that's scary as hell for the American League East. I don't see them blowing this up. It's not the Miami Marlins, or Florida Marlins. ... I think Toronto sees an entire nation of millions of people energized. The Boston Bruins here were playing the Ottawa Senators the other day. They were showing the game on the scoreboard while the hockey game was going on. Everybody is excited north of the border. So I just think this is the beginning of an era of Toronto being really good, which is really scary for everybody in the American League."
