Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night in Game 5 of the World Series as the Jays won 6-1.
With a 3-2 series lead now in hand, the Jays are one win away from their first World Series title since 1993. The Dodgers are one loss away from elimination.
Yesavage, who began the year playing in Single-A ball, struck out 12 over seven masterful innings. He allowed just one earned run on three hits, walking nobody.
As noted by Sarah Langs of MLB.com, he also joined an elite group of inner circle Hall of Famers in baseball history.
Trey Yesavage struck out all nine batters in the Dodgers starting lineup, becoming the third pitcher in World Series history to strike out each batter in a starting lineup, joining Randy Johnson in Game 2 of the 2001 World Series and Bob Gibson in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series
Any time you can join that duo in history, you've done something right, and Yesavage certainly has. A first-round pick of the Jays in 2024 (East Carolina) Yesavage has made his presence felt in these playoffs, going 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA. It's likely his season is now done, but there is an outside chance he could appear in relief in a Game 7 scenario. The Blue Jays will try to end the series before getting to that point.
A 22-year veteran of the Montreal Expos, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees, Johnson went 303-166 for his career with a 3.29 ERA. He won double-digit games in 16 different seasons and had three seasons of 20 or more wins. One of the most intimidating pitchers of all-time, he was a 10-time All-Star, a five-time Cy Young winner, a Triple Crown winner and a World Series champion.
He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
A 17-year veteran of the St. Louis Cardinals, Gibson went 251-174 with a 2.91 ERA. A former MVP, he was a nine-time All-Star and a nine-time Gold Glove winner. He won two Cy Young Awards and two World Series titles. He also won an ERA title and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1981.
The Blue Jays and Dodgers will travel back to Canada on Thursday with Game 6 looming on Friday night.
