Cards purchase contract of former Phillies, Independent League reliever

The Cardinals purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Andrew Schultz on Tuesday and assigned him to Double-A Springfield.

Schultz, 28, most recently appeared in 16 games with the independent Atlantic League’s Lancaster Stormers. He posted a 1.69 ERA with a league-leading 17.4 strikeouts per nine innings pitches and league-best 2.3 hits per nine innings pitched.

Schultz, a former sixth round draft selection out of the University of Tennessee in 2019, pitched five seasons in the Phillies system and posted a career 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in 147 MLB relief appearances.
