The rivalry between the Cardinals and the Cubs is one of the oldest and most storied in all of sports, and it shows no signs of ending even though the two teams have yet to face off this season.

After the Cardinals requested waivers on Luis Peralta on Friday, the Cubs stepped in and claimed the left-handed pitcher on Sunday. Clearly, the Cardinals had hoped to pass Peralta through waivers and keep him in their Minor League system after claiming him earlier in the week when he was waived by the Rockies.

However, the Cubs foiled that Cardinals' plan by nabbing Peralta, the younger brother of former Brewers and current Mets star right-hander Freddy Peralta.

The Cardinals had to waive the 25-year-old Peralta earlier in the week to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Hunter Dobbins, who was promoted to start Thursday's series finale against the Pirates. Dobbins was optioned to Memphis and lefty Jared Shuster was recalled in hopes of fortifying the bullpen before facing lefties Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy and the Dodgers this weekend at Busch Stadium.

Peralta, who made his MLB debut on Aug. 24, 2024, with a 1 2/3-inning scoreless relief outing against the Yankees, posted a 0.73 ERA over 15 big-league appearances out of the Colorado bullpen in 2024. That season, he struck out 14 batters compared to just five walks. However, things did not go as smoothly for him in 2025, when he surrendered six homers and 20 earned runs in 19 innings over 22 outings.

Back in the Minor Leagues in 2026 for his eighth season below the MLB level, Peralta was hammered for 10 hits, two homers and 14 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings (six appearances, one start) with Triple-A Albuquerque.
