Cardinals' Double-A affiliate, Springfield, is set to begin a six-game series in Tulsa (Okla.) tonight and then it plays another six-game series in Arkansas (May 19-24) before finally returning to Southwest Missouri for the home debut of 19-year-old sensation Rainiel Rodriguez.
The Cardinals promoted Rodriguez, a sweet-swinging slugger, from High-A Peoria to Double-A Springfield on Monday. Rodriguez, who is 19 years and two months of age, will be the second-youngest position player in Double-A only to Brewers infielder Jesus Made, who recently turned 19 years old. Rodriguez is the No. 2-ranked prospect in the Cards system and No. 27 in baseball, per MLB Pipeline.
Catcher/first baseman Rainiel Rodriguez is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Cardinals' Minor League system and No. 27 overall in baseball, per MLB Pipeline.Baseball fans in Springfield have to be fired up about the chance to watch the massive potential of the 5-foot-10, 197-pound Rodriguez, who batted .311 with a .949 OPS in 28 games with Peoria. He had eight doubles, a triple, four homers and 21 RBI before being promoted.
After winning the Texas League title in 2025 in dominant fashion, the S-Cards have mostly struggled this season. Losing JJ Wetherholt, Joshua Baez, Leonardo Bernal, Brycen Mautz and Xian Henderson to Triple-A Memphis would tend to sap a team of latent.
Still, Springfield should be loaded with promising talent that might be in the big leagues within a few years. Rodriguez will be joined by several other top Cardinals prospects.
Top organizational prospect, Liam Doyle has pitched well of late after a slow start to the season. No. 3-ranked switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje was acquired in February from the Mariners in the trade centered around All-Star infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan. Brandon Clarke (No. 8) and Cooper Hjerpe (No. 16) are in Springfield and working their way back from injuries and could rejoin the pitching staff at some point this season.
