I'm not one to defend defense over offense in modern baseball. But it's also stupid to over-correct.

Defense (and speed) provides value -- that's why Nico Hoerner put up 4.8 fWAR last season despite his inability to hit for power. You need those types of guys on your team, and to act like Matt Shaw is definitely going to add that kind of value is foolish.

If it comes down to trading Shaw or Hoerner, the Cubs should still do neither. Shaw might see his playing time diminish, and that might hurt his development, sure. But the Cubs are in the middle of a championship window. You don't just ship 4.8 WAR out the door to save a little against the luxury tax.
