While it might be a stretch, could the San Francisco Giants be looking toward another National League team for some additional starting pitching?
It's possible. At least, that's how one veteran MLB insider looks at the situation.
Freddy Peralta has been a stellar starter for the Milwaukee Brewers. He's proven to be a standout for a team looking to soar beyond the National League Championship Series. The Brewers did beat the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series last season before getting swept by eventual World Series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But picking up Peralta would come at some type of cost to the Giants.
Bowden, who has been a general manager in MLB as well as holding other executive positions, has offered some thoughts on the Giants potentially picking up Peralta. In a story for The Athletic, Bowden offered five different trade options.
And yes, Bowden offered up the Giants as a landing spot. For Peralta, according to Bowden, San Francisco could send right-handed pitcher Landen Roupp and second baseman-shortstop Jhonny Level to the Brewers.
"The Giants can offer a rotation-ready arm and a middle-of-the-diamond prospect who could help the Brewers in a few years," Bowden wrote.
"Roupp, 27, had his breakout season at the major-league level in 2025 before suffering a left knee sprain in late August that didn’t require surgery but ended his season," Bowden continued. "Before that, he made 22 starts, posting a 3.80 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 106 2/3 innings.
"Batters struggled against his secondary pitches, highlighted by the fact that they hit just .197 against his curveball and .192 against his changeup," Bowden wrote. "He profiles as a mid-rotation type starter but is controllable through 2030.
"Level, 18, signed with the Giants out of Venezuela in January 2024," Bowden wrote. "He starred in the Dominican Summer League that season and hit .288/.375/.493 in the Arizona Complex League this past season before finishing in Low A. He has an above-average hit tool and has power.
"He’s a good athlete who can run," Bowden continued. "Level is one of the Giants’ top prospects, but they have two other shortstop prospects among their top group (Josuar Gonzalez and Gavin Kilen), allowing them to take this risk for the opportunity to pair Peralta with Logan Webb at the top of their rotation for at least a season."
Could you imagine seeing Peralta and Webb as a one-two punch in the Giants' rotation? Even if it is for one season, as Bowden suggests, might bring out fans to Oracle Park for their starts. The Giants, of course, have a new manager in Tony Vitello. If Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey could swing this deal, then it helps set up Vitello for even a modicum of success in his first season.
The Winter Meetings are coming up pretty soon, so it'll be worth keeping an eye out for this potential deal between the Giants and Brewers.
