While the San Francisco Giants are getting their ducks in a row to name a new manager, they also are going to be looking at the MLB free agency situation, too.
The Giants want to improve their roster going into the 2026 MLB season with the hopes of being more competitive in the National League West Division. San Francisco has fallen short of expectations, which led to the ouster of manager Bob Melvin after the 2025 regular season ended.
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey appears to be eyeballing University of Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello at the moment. Vitello has said in media reports that nothing is firmed up at this point.
While Posey and Giants management deal with a new leader in the team's clubhouse, they also are going to keep an eye on the free agent market.
What might be available for Posey to pick up if he wants to add another stellar hitter or starting pitcher?
"Posey moved quickly and decisively to fill the Giants’ biggest need last offseason, signing the best shortstop on the market -- Willy Adames -- to a seven-year, $182 million deal," Giants reporter Maria Guardado wrote for MLB.com.
"But with Adames, Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman and Jung Hoo Lee now locked into big contracts, it seems unlikely that the Giants will be operating with quite the same aggressiveness this winter," Guardado wrote.
"Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker and Astros left-hander Framber Valdez are among the top free agents who could be a fit for the Giants, but Posey and Co. might be leery of taking on more long-term commitments or targeting players who receive a qualifying offer, which would result in the loss of more Draft picks."
If Tucker and Valdez just happen to find their way together to the Bay Area, it will team up a couple of players who know each other from their time with the Houston Astros.
Those big contracts, though, might just lock Posey and the Giants out of making not only one, but two, big free agent splashes.
It's also not clear if the Giants are going to bring back starting pitcher Justin Verlander, who is a free agent at this time. They might want to move along from the future Baseball Hall of Famer despite his closing statistics last season.
For now, Giants fans will have to take a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to picking up any other free agents on the main roster.
