San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb has put together a nice season and has been one reason the Giants have stayed in postseason play conversations.
While the Giants are pretty much going to pack it up and head to Cancun for some after-season fun, Webb is earning praise for his efforts. In the latest MLB Power Rankings from The Athletic, San Francisco slipped three spots to No. 18.
After Monday night's 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Giants are 77-80 for the season and look to get at or above .500 before the MLB regular season ends.
In talking about Webb, Andy McCullough of The Athletic pointed out some of Webb's high marks toward a potential team Most Valuable Player recognition.
"Webb has led the sport in innings since 2022," McCullough wrote. "If he secures an out in the fourth inning of his final start, he’ll notch 200 innings for the third consecutive season.
"In this era, that’s quite the achievement," McCullough wrote. "He upped his slider usage, which improved his strikeout rate. For the most part, though, he did his usual best to generate soft contact on the ground and gobble up outs.
"They really don’t make ’em like Webb anymore — except for Framber Valdez, a mirror image of Webb, down to being left-handed."
Giants manager Bob Melvin has done a decent job of managing his starting rotation this season. At some points, though, it needed help beyond Webb. He can't go out and start every single game for San Francisco.
While finding a clone of Webb would benefit the team, he's a pitcher who is in his own mold.
Hopefully, Webb can get some rest between now and next season. That might also be a good idea for the team as a whole. The MLB season is one long haul and teams who have been pushing the buttons to get into the postseason, and fall short, will feel the pain more accutely.
Webb will come back and have a strong 2026 season. Give him time to recuperate and get over the push and pull of a 162-game season and he'll be back better than ever.
