Now that the San Francisco Giants have moved along from Bob Melvin, they have an opening at the managerial spot. Who might they be looking for at this point?
It's a pretty decent market for some names, outside of Skip Schumaker, who took over for Bruce Bochy with the Texas Rangers.
As the Giants continue their offseason preparations, Buster Posey has to pick a new leader.
What might this opportunity present someone at this point? Levi Weaver of The Athletic put the Giants' managerial position in some perspective.
"At one point in 2025, the Giants had the best record in baseball," Weaver wrote. "Their pitching wasn’t bad (10th best team ERA), until it was (7th most runs allowed in September), and their hitting … well, it underperformed, ranking 17th out of 30 teams in runs scored (though they did seem to rediscover the 'hit-home-run' button on the controller over the last month).
"You’ll have Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman and a 6-7 power bomber first base prospect (Bryce Eldridge)," Weaver wrote. "Plus, Willy Adames just became the first Giant to hit 30 home runs since Barry Bonds. So getting that sorted out is your job. The park is lovely, the president of baseball operations knows ball (and is a very motivated competitor).
"The downside? You’re in a division with the Dodgers (and Padres, and Diamondbacks). The upside? You beat these Dodgers, and finally — finally — you, Connie Mack, will be recognized as a truly great manager."
The Dodgers and San Diego Padres reached the 2025 MLB postseason as Los Angeles is still playing in the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. As for the Padres, they lost in the National League Wild Card Series to the Chicago Cubs.
That's two teams, in the same National League West Division, that reached the postseason. The Giants want to be in that conversation, too. And they need to make sure they make the right hire.
