After his call-up on Thursday, former Miami Marlins pitcher Valente Bellozo struck out seven batters and allowed only a home run in six innings of relief in the Colorado Rockies' 10-1 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday in Denver.
Bellozo came into the game after Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen gave up nine runs on 12 hits in three innings for the loss. Rockies manager Warren Schaefer said during his postgame press conference Bellozo was the "hero of the game."
"It’s beyond words how important that was for us," Schaefer said. "I mean Bellozo saved our bullpen today in a big, big, big way."
Bellozo spent the previous two seasons with the Marlins, both as a starting pitcher and in the bullpen. The Marlins acquired him in a trade with the Houston Astros for Jacob Amaya on April 6, 2024. His best season came as a rookie in 2024, when he posted a 3.67 ERA in 13 starts as the Marlins were trading away veterans for prospects.
Bellozo started last season in the rotation, but most of his appearances came out of the bullpen, pitching in relief in 32 games (six starts) with a 4.65 ERA in 81.1 innings. His WHIP remained consistent through both seasons (1.31-1.33), and he allowed 15 home runs each year regardless of his role.
