Update on Fairbanks
Sep 19, 2026 3:53 AM
The Miami Marlins announced Friday that reliever Pete Fairbanks has been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and will miss the remainder of the season, according to Marlins team reporter Christina De Nicola.
Fairbanks will undergo surgery on a date to be determined by Dr. Gregory J. Pearl. The typical recovery period for a pitcher is about nine to 10 months.
Thoracic outlet syndrome is a group of conditions caused by the compression of nerves or blood vessels. The compression can cause shoulder and neck pain, as well as numbness in the fingers, a weak grip, cold hands and swelling.
