
Braxton Ashcraft pitched 5 1/3 strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the visiting Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Wednesday night in a Grapefruit League game in Bradenton, Fla.
Ashcraft (1-0) gave up only one unearned run on five hits. He struck out eight and walked none while lowering his spring ERA to 2.03 in 13 1/3 innings.
Tyler Calihan went 2 for 3 with his first home run since being acquired last week from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade. He also scored twice.
Carson Fulmer notched his second save as the Pirates improved to 16-9.
