Top prospect Konnor Griffin homered twice, and the Pittsburgh Pirates had 21 hits in beating the host Boston Red Sox 16-7 on Tuesday in a Grapefruit League game in Fort Myers, Fla.
Griffin’s home run in the fourth inning was measured at 440 feet. The 19-year-old shortstop is considered the top prospect in baseball.
The Pirates had their most hits in a spring training game since 2014, improving to 4-1 in exhibition games.
Nick Yorke went 3 for 4 with a triple and a stolen base against his former team. Each of Yorke’s hits had an exit velocity of at least 100 mph, a good sign as he tries to win a roster spot as a utilityman.
Presumptive opening-day shortstop Nick Gonzales also went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and is 5 for 6 in his last two games. Jake Mangum, Jhostynxon Garcia, and Termarr Johnson had two hits each.
Carmen Mlodzinski (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, striking out three.
