
Starting pitcher Mitch Keller worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings and second baseman Brandon Lowe reached base in all three plate appearances as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the visiting Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Friday in a Grapefruit League game at Bradenton, Fla.
Keller had four strikeouts and has yet to allow a run in 4 1/3 innings this spring. Issac Mattson (1-0) and Gregory Soto each pitched one scoreless inning of relief for the Pirates (6-2).
Lowe went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk. Outfield prospect Esmerlyn Valdez hit an RBI single during a five-run seventh inning that snapped a 1-1 tie.
