The Pittsburgh Pirates traded relief pitcher Kyle Nicolas to the Cincinnati Reds for rookie utility player Tyler Callihan on Wednesday night.

The left-handed-hitting Calihan made his major league debut last April 30, but his season ended five days later when he broke his left forearm when he collided with the outfield fence at Truist Park in Atlanta. Calihan went 1 for 6 in four games.

Calihan, 25, began last season at Triple-A Louisville and hit .303/.410/.528 with four home runs and six stolen bases in 24 games. Baseball America ranked him as the Reds’ No. 19 prospect coming into spring training this year.

Nicolas, 27. pitched in parts of the prior three seasons for the Pirates, appearing in 86 games. He has a 3-4 career record, a 4.68 ERA, and 96 strikeouts in 98 innings.
