The Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-hander reliever Chase Shugart for assignment on Friday, clearing space on the 40-man roster for the addition of first baseman/outfielder Ryan O'Hearn, who signed a two-year, $29-million contract as a free agent. Shugart, 29, was 4-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 35 games last season.
