With Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker looking forward to his first season in the dugout for the ballclub, the team looked to potentially make some deals at the Winter Meetings.
Now that those have ended in Orlando, Fla., all MLB teams have returned home to check their lists of needs and wants closely.
There wasn't much movement at all for the Rangers during the meetings. In fact, there was only one transaction posted by Texas during that time.
That trade involved getting right-handed pitcher Carter Baumler from the Pittsburgh Pirates for Texas righty Jaiker Garcia and cash considerations.
But the Rangers have other holes to fill at this time, too.
According to an article from Rangers reporter Kennedi Landry for MLB.com, Texas must look at its catching situation.
The only experienced catcher on Texas' roster at this time is Kyle Higashioka. He had a slash line last season of .241/.291/.403 in 94 games, catching 71 of them. Landry pointed out that the Rangers are not tied to having Higashioka work that many games, yet she also pointed out that he's going to be 36 this coming April 2026.
Texas also might want to have a catcher under club control, too. After 2026, Higashioka will be a free agent.
"Some of that's dictated by the market, but we're going to explore all avenues," Rangers general manager Ross Fenstermaker said when Landry interviewed him. "If there's an opportunity to get somebody who is controllable for the foreseeable future, we will explore that.
"That's a lot of the conversations we've been having," Fenstermaker said. "If it's free agency or something that's maybe shorter term, we'll explore that as well. We can do both concurrently."
The ballclub also could use some more starting pitching help. The Rangers' rotation could use a solid pickup or two in this area as well.
But Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young wasn't totally disappointed in what he and club did in Orlando.
"I think it was an extremely productive week in terms of conversations with agents, with clubs and with our own people, in terms of mapping out different paths and courses that we're going to take," Young said. "It wasn't a big splash. We had that a few weeks ago (speaking about the Brandon Nimmo acquisition, but I think it was extremely productive. So we're in a good spot."
There's still time before Spring Training, which is 71 days away from starting as of Dec. 11, for the Rangers to make a move or two. Let's see what the ballclub does before then, too.
