Ahead of Tuesday night’s game in West Sacramento against the Athletics, the Boston Red Sox will reportedly place newly acquired infielder Curtis Mead on the 10-day injured list with a broken left wrist.  

Boston acquired the 25-year-old infielder from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed starter Connelly Early on Saturday night. 

Mead made his Red Sox debut on Monday night in the 4-2 victory over the Athletics, playing second base and batting second. His night was cut short, however, when he was hit in the left hand by a 94 mph pitch from A’s starter Jack Perkins in the top of the fourth inning. 

The infielder took his base after being plunked and fielded his position for the bottom half of the fourth. However, when the Red Sox took the field for the bottom of the fifth inning, it was Anthony Seigler who trotted out to second base, replacing Mead in his Boston debut. NESN cameras caught the 25-year-old departing the field with trainers, favoring the wrist that was hit. 

The 25-year-old finished his Red Sox debut going 0-for-1 after striking out looking in his first plate appearance. 

When meeting with the media after the win, interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters that they “may have dodged a bullet” after X-Rays on the wrist were negative. However, according to Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, further testing revealed a broken wrist. 

After struggling to a .238/.300/.317/.618 slash line over his first three seasons in the majors, Mead is amidst a breakout season at the plate in 2026, hitting .256/.351/.505/.856 with 17 home runs and 48 RBI in 86 games for Washington before being sent to Boston on Saturday night. Now, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, after just one game in a Red Sox uniform, he’ll hit the injured list for at least 10 days. 

According to Cassell, the team is calling up switch-hitting utility man Nick Sogard to take Mead’s place on the 26-man roster. 

The promotion marks the second of 2026 for the switch-hitting utility man. In 35 at-bats with the major league club, the 28-year-old has hit .257/.350/.371/.721 while playing all across the infield. 

In 46 games for Triple-A Worcester, Sogard is hitting .269/.410/.437/.847 with five home runs, 28 RBI, and 11 doubles. According to Speier, he will not join Boston on the West Coast until Wednesday. 

The Red Sox and Athletics will be back at it from Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento on Tuesday night in game two of a four-game set. Bennett (6-3, 2.58 ERA) will get the start for the Sox opposite fellow rookie left-hander Gage Jump (3-6, 4.42 ERA) for the A’s. First pitch is set for 9:40 p.m. ET.
