Currently sitting atop the Eastern Conference at 4-0, the Philadelphia 76ers have had a red-hot start to their season. Despite Joel Embiid playing with restricted minutes and missing a game against the Orlando Magic, the team has been able to put together an incredible run to start the year.
Tyrese Maxey has been the leading player in this effort, averaging 37.5 PPG and 8.3 APG through his first four games. Though it's only been four games, Maxey has shown no signs of slowing down, scoring 39 points points in his last outing against the Washington Wizards.
In this game, the Sixers rallied back from a 19-point deficit, and it became their third fourth-quarter comeback in four games. The fight that this team has showed thus far this season has been nothing short of incredible, and it's something that we haven't seen in years prior.
Now coming back late in the game for the third time, it's appeared to be a habit rather than a fluke. It's a little concerning that they've been down late in the game three times, but it's more impressive that they've been able to overcome every deficit.
That said, perhaps the most impressive aspect of this season is that they have done all of this without Paul George and Jared McCain. Thankfully for the Sixers, they received some news that could help the team continue this early dominance.
McCain has been recovering from a torn UCL in his thumb that he suffered a month before the season started. Even with the success of Philadelphia's backcourt, McCain will always be a positive addition to the lineup. Fortunately, he has been progressing well through that injury, and there should be an update on him soon.
As for George, according to Jake Fischer, there's "positive momentum" about him returning within the next "week-plus."
With the Sixers continuing to struggle to maintain leads through games, having their last star return could be the final piece of the puzzle. Particularly with Embiid's restrictions, the team could use another player who can take over a game.
Granted, George isn't the same player he once was, but he's in a much better position to succeed this season. With the addition of Edgecombe, there's another player in the lineup who can score 20-30 points on a given night, which will take a lot of pressure off George.
The idea of a 4-0 team adding another star to their starting lineup should terrify the rest of the NBA, as he could help them continue their streak into something more sustainable. For the time being, they'll have to continue their success without him, but he should be back in action very soon.
