The Chicago Bulls finally ripped off the band-aid on Monday, relieving VP of Basketball Ops Arturas Karnisovas and General Manager Marc Eversley of their duties. It was a move that to many critics seemed to be long overdue, as the Bulls have made the playoffs once--and made a series of trades that have not worked out for the franchise (to put it kindly)--since Karnisovas and Eversley were brought in, along with Billy Donovan, who they hired as head coach that same season (2020-21).

The choice to commit to keeping Billy Donovan as the head coach even as they start a search for a new VP of Basketball Operations is a bold one, as most--if not all--executives entering that role would prefer to make the call on head coach, even if the incumbent has proved to be somewhere between competent to above average.

This was a massive day, one of the most eventful in Bulls history. The University of North Carolina seemed poised to nab Donovan as their next head coach but have since moved on to hire Mike Malone, a move that was likely inspired by Donovan's indecision on the move.

The Bulls current search to replace Karnisovas needs to be thorough, yet efficient. The Bulls will have a lottery pick in a loaded 2026 draft class. The lottery itself takes place on May 10th in Chicago, and the Bulls will surely want to have their new executive in place before then. I am admittedly on the fence in terms of my belief in the Bulls to nail this hire, but perhaps the input of Donovan--who will need to work closely with whoever is hired--could lead to a front office-head coach duo that at least seems to be on the same page in terms of vision and, most importantly, draft philosophy.
