The Cleveland Cavaliers are hosting the Miami Heat for the first of two meetings in three nights! I'll be live updating this page throughout the night.
The Cavs will be without Dean Wade, Max Strus, Jarrett Allen, Jaylon Tyson, and Craig Porter Jr., as well as Tristan Enaruna and Olivier Sarr. Larry Nance Jr. is questionable.
Starters:
Heat - Mitchell, Herro, Powell, Wiggins, Adebayo
Cavs - Harden, Mitchell, Merrill, Ellis, Mobley
FIRST QUARTER
The Heat are just attacking the basketball defensively. The Cavs are a step slow again out of the gate. Norman Powell's got a couple threes, the last one right over James Harden on a solid contest. Miami up 13-4.
Dennis Schroder comes in for Donovan Mitchell, then Nae'Qwan Tomlin in for Sam Merrill.
Mobley's leading by example in this last stretch defensively with some shoves and standing his ground.
Harden-Schroder-Ellis-Tomlin-Mobley the combo. Thomas Bryant at the table. We're still seeing five-man units that we haven't seen play together on March 25. Pretty wild.
Kenny Atkinson going with Schroder-Mitchell-Harden trio next to Tomlin and Bryant. Another completely different look. He's searching. Cavs have tightened up a bit, still trailing 19-15 with 2:43 left.
Seven threes for Miami on 16 tries. Herro's got three of 'em.
END 1Q: Heat 28, Cavs 19
MIA: Herro 9p, 1r, 1a. Powell 6p, 1r, 1stl. Ware 3p, 3r.
CLE: Harden 7p, 2a, 1r. Mitchell 4p, 3r, 1a.
SECOND QUARTER
Qwan's gonna give you his all guarding the ball, even if it comes with fouls or the occasional slip in technique.
Sam Merrill is officially now a drive-first guy off the catch.
It feels like Atkinson is willing to get multiple techs today to wake the Cavs up more than he did in the press conference. He's toeing the line already. Cleveland down 41-25 about three minutes into the second frame.
Qwan had three fouls but one that was credited to Bryant just got added to his total, so he has four hacks in nine minutes despite being effective in his floor time. Hurts Cavs who are extra limited in size today.
Tyrese Proctor checks in for Cleveland. He was a part of a group that had a heck of a night in South Beach the last time these teams met.
Cavs are now defending decently, but cannot buy a bucket. Miami answering Spo's challenge and equally, Cleveland not quite in sync after a 136-point night. Boos starting to surface...
At a certain point, this is gonna fall on Atkinson. And I hate that because it's a month-and-a-half of runway. But alas...
HALF: Heat 63, Cavs 46
MIA: Powell 13p, 2r, 1a, stl. Herro 11p, 2r, 2a. Wiggins 10p, 2r, 2stl, 1a. Ware 6p, 7r, 1a. Mitchell 9p, 1a, stl, blk.
CLE: Mitchell 13p, 4r, 2a. Harden 7p, 6r, 3a. Ellis 10p, 1r, 1a, stl. Merrill 7p, 1r, 1a.
THIRD QUARTER
Sam Merrill leading the charge here in the second half out of the gate. 11 quick points to trim Miami's advantage to 75-65. Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder doing some good things.
Donovan Mitchell got this place rocking with a late flurry. Harden hit a huge catch-shoot three as well.
Life is in the building for the Cavs! That third quarter was what I thought was coming in the opening period.
END 3Q: Cavs 83, Heat 83
MIA: Adebayo 14p, 10r, 5a, stl. Powell 15p, 4r, 1a, stl. Wiggins 12p, 3r, 2a, 2stl. Herro 13p, 3a, 2r, stl.
CLE: Mitchell 26p, 5r, 3a. Merrill 18p, 3a, 1r. Ellis 14p, 2stl, 1r, 1a. Harden 12p, 8r, 7a, blk. Mobley 7p, 5r, 3a.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Heat have come back down to earth from the field because Cleveland started being the aggressors defensively and found some daylight offensively.
Cavs' defensive effort has been terrific in the second half, which could've been useful in the first half. Miami getting some breaks here in the fourth and some late-clock stuff to go down now...
Donovan Mitchell fouls out. Heat running away with it now despite Cleveland altering the momentum at the start of the fourth.
