Rough night at TD Garden for Onyeka Okongwu, who took a hard elbow to the face from Jaylen Brown during Wednesday’s win over Boston. The collision sent Okongwu to the floor and left him visibly bloodied, and it was later revealed he lost two teeth on the play.
Despite the scary moment, Okongwu stayed in it and finished with 17 points as the Hawks pulled away for a 117–106 victory. Brown was assessed a flagrant foul and said afterward the contact wasn’t intentional, calling it a basketball play and acknowledging how frustrating dental injuries can be from his own past experience.
Quin Snyder didn’t downplay the hit, noting Okongwu “took quite a shot,” but also tried to lighten the moment by pointing out modern dentistry can fix a lot — even if the recovery won’t be fun.
Plays like this always spark debate, especially when blood and injuries are involved.
Was the flagrant the right call? Should the league be tougher on elbows to the head, even when they’re deemed incidental? And what does it say about Okongwu’s toughness that he finished the game the way he did?
