The Sacramento Kings remain hopeful that the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft will prove to bring real, long-awaited change to a franchise plagued by misery for the better part of the past three decades, but NBA Commissioner Adam Silver might have thrown a massive wrench into their plans.
Silver recently took action against the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers for overt tanking actions, fining the two franchises $500,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Now, a new statement from the Commissioner hinted at taking further, more drastic actions by eliminating the draft entirely. This would also eliminate any reason to tank, but the timing of this news could not be worse for Sacramento.
"...If Silver and his advisers decided the only way to stop tanking, and thereby protect paying customers from forking over money to watch their teams lose on purpose, was to stop the draft altogether and turn rookies into free agents, that same league official said it would get serious consideration," one league source shared, according to The Athletic's Joe Vardon.
Talks of this nature are still in its infancy, and they very well may not affect this year's draft. Even still, the future of the Kings will rely on acquiring more than just one star-studded rookie over the next few years. If the draft is affected in any way to prevent tanking, the Kings might be one of the franchises most affected by the decision in the long run.
Will Silver seriously consider abolishing the NBA Draft entirely?
