This season, the Detroit Pistons jettisoned to first place in the Eastern Conference so quickly in large part thanks to Cade Cunningham's MVP-caliber play, but the All-Star starter has demonstrated a rare quality that really solidifies his status as a special player.
Cunningham, who is one of the most versatile two-way players in the NBA, uses his size and vision to slice through defenses en route to the bucket, and he's averaging 25.3 points per game this year while also ranking No. 2 in the league for assists per game. Cunningham's timing on when to defer to his teammates is a key element that elevates everybody that plays with the fifth-year guard, and his team-first approach also caught the attention from Detroit Pistons legend and NBA Hall of Famer Dave Bing.
"On the Pistons' team, obviously Cade Cunningham is the driving force and he's an exceptionally heady player," Bing said. "He understands the game, all the nuances of the game, and what I'm really impressed about is he's very unselfish. He could probably average 30+ points a game if he really wanted to because he's that talented, but he makes sure he gets the other players involved in the game. That's one of the reasons why they're winning and playing so well."
Bing spent nine seasons with the Pistons and two with the Washington Bullets, so he's certainly going to be locked into tonight's Eastern Conference battle at Little Caesars Arena.
