The West's surprising openness fuels Rockets' playoff aspirations. Discover their strategic moves and realistic championship ambitions as the trade deadline looms.

The Thunder seemed untouchable just over a month ago, racking up 24 wins before getting handed their second loss of the season —— but things can change quickly in the NBA.

After San Antonio started the season 3-0 against the reigning champs, that seemingly gave the rest of the league faith that this newly formed juggernaut could actually be beaten.

Following their 24-2 start, they picked up six more losses and only twelve wins since December 18th. While they’ll more than likely stay comfortable at the top of the standings, they have shown signs of being a more vulnerable team than previously thought.

With that being said, what does this mean for the Houston Rockets? As the trade deadline approaches, it’s important to know what some realistic goals and expectations are for this team. What pieces might suit this team and what would the front office be willing to give up?

I think it’s obvious none of the stars are on the table, so KD, Sengun, and Amen Thompson have nothing to worry about. It’s also hard to imagine they’d shop Jabari Smith Jr. after recently extending. Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason are promising young guys who will probably remain on the roster as well.

Despite not being inclined to offer much in any trade, I still think Houston has to be aggressive at making small improvements. The West is more open than anyone predicted, so a deeper playoff run is a realistic goal for the Rockets. Back in the 4th seed as of now, they should continue to focus on staying atop the conference.

I wouldn't expect that to result in a Finals run, but it's still important to make steady improvements. Build on their success from last season and aim to make it out of the first round at the bare minimum. Anything can happen in the playoffs, so I'd suggest tweaking the roster to help with that unpredictable road. Only time will tell what Rafael Stone and ownership decide to do in the next couple weeks.
