The former NBA All-Star believes the Minnesota Timberwolves could be in the market for a big-name point guard.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have started their 2025-26 campaign 2-3 through five games before facing the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night, most recently coming off two consecutive losses to the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers.

Of course, it does not help when superstar guard Anthony Edwards is sidelined with a hamstring injury, but the Timberwolves have a few problems across the board that they must address.

The biggest problem for the Timberwolves seems to be the point guard position, as they have had to experiment with Donte DiVincenzo in the starting spot, while 38-year-old Mike Conley’s impact continues to decline in his 19th NBA season.

With Edwards nearing his peak, the Timberwolves want to compete for titles as soon as possible, and after back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances, they know they are so close.

Could the Timberwolves Trade for a Point Guard?

If the Timberwolves want to make the most of their 2025-26 season, they could be in the market to trade for a point guard, and a new star could potentially be hitting the market.

Four-time NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he thinks the Timberwolves should target Ja Morant.

“Ja to minny Or Houston! Please and thank you!” Cousins posted.

DeMarcus Cousins wants Ja Morant to Houston or Minnesota.

Of course, before even diving into it, a backcourt of Ja Morant and Anthony Edwards would be electric and would give fans a show every night, but is this a realistic move?

    Ja Morant’s Impact

Morant, 26, is averaging 20.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.7 assists through six games this season, while the Memphis Grizzlies sit at just 3-3 with a recent loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. After that loss, Morant had some concerning comments, seemingly putting some blame on the coaching staff, and was even handed a one-game suspension.

Ja Morant's frustration with the Grizzlies

While Morant has had a couple of underwhelming performances to start his 2025-26 season, including his eight-point dud in Memphis’ loss to the Lakers, the star point guard can undoubtedly still make a huge impact. The high-flying highlight reel would not only help the Timberwolves sell tickets, but having a point guard of his caliber would fill a gaping hole in Minnesota’s lineup.

Is a Trade for Morant Feasible?

While the idea of a Morant trade for the Timberwolves sounds great, it is very unrealistic.

Morant is on the third season of a five-year, $197.2 million contract, as he is guaranteed nearly $40 million this season alone. For a Timberwolves team that lacks financial flexibility, they would have a very challenging time trying to get a trade for Morant to work.

Regardless of how likely this trade is to happen, the Timberwolves could keep their eyes on Morant’s rocky situation in Memphis, and could be a potential destination if things continue to go south.
