We broke down the quarterbacks we feel are the most overrated in college football. Let us know what you think in the comments!
Here is my list:
Bryce Underwood, Michigan - Underwood showed up at Michigan with the "generational" billing, but his freshman season was wildly underwhelming. He has a lot of talent, but even in the spring we've seen he still has the same problematic mechanics and poor feel for reading defenses that limit him right now. He has a long way to go before he deserves being in any kind of conversation about the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten, much less the nation.
Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma State - Make no mistake, I like Mestemaker a lot as a college quarterback. He's the perfect for the Eric Morris system and I think he'll be prolific this season for the Cowboys. But I'm seeing people ranking him as a Top 5 national quarterback and projecting him as a Top 10 NFL Draft pick. I just don't see anything close to that kind of talent. The numbers will be great, but I believe a lot of that production is system driven.
Sam Leavitt, LSU - This is another talented quarterback that is getting more hype than his production and consistency warrants. Leavitt had a solid redshirt freshman season, passing for 2,885 yards (8.2 YPC) and 24 touchdowns while helping Arizona State to the playoffs. He had an injury riddled 2025 season, and he missed much of the spring for the Tigers. Leavitt picked the perfect system for his skillset, and he'll produce at LSU if he can stay healthy, but like Mestemaker, the issue for me is that he's getting pumped up as a Top 5 national QB and a high first round caliber draft pick, and that's what I just don't see.
LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina - Sellers had a really impressive redshirt freshman season, passing for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns to go with 674 yards and 7 more scores. He's a talented player and if he can stay healthy he'll be a really good leader for the Gamecocks. The issue is that he got bumped up way too much when evaluating him compared to other top quarterbacks. He's a really good college quarterback, he's a guy South Carolina needs if they are going to bounce back, but he's just not a guy that should be in the conversation for the nation's top quarterbacks.
Jayden Maiava, USC - This is another who I think is a quality college quarterback, but his numbers and the fact he plays for USC causes him to get way, way too much love. He's being projected as a Top 10 pick in next year's NFL Draft and I've seen people rank him as a Top 5, or borderline Top 5 quarterback in the country. That I don't see. The numbers are part of the system, and while he does have tools, no doubt, he's not the big time QB people think he is. He isn't the most accurate quarterback and he turns the ball over too much. He threw 10 INT in each of his two seasons as a full-time starter and threw six picks in four starts at USC in 2024.
