The Texas Longhorns (4-2) defeated the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners (5-1) on Saturday. The win was significant in more ways than one.
Heading into the game, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian drew criticism for his 2-8 record vs. Top 25 opponents in one-score games. Sarkisian was compared to Penn State's James Franklin in his lack of success against top opponents. The Longhorns coach responded with a dominant win over the No. 6 team in the country.
The Longhorns didn't just beat their rivals on Saturday. They gave a blueprint to moving the football and scoring on the Sooners.
One play in particular gave Sarkisian an edge on Saturday. We did not see much of it in the first half, but saw Texas unleash it in the second half. Sarkisian and company went to the well and ran Outside Zone. They did so over and over successfully.
Outside Zone is a horizontal running play that moves the defense wide and allows the running back to attack outside, cut upfield at an open running lane or cut back the opposite way if the defense over-pursues on the play. Texas famously ran it against the Sooners with Bijan Robinson with great success but made hay with the play last season with Tre Wisner.
Wisner had a big game last season rushing for 118 yards on 13 carries. Texas had a better offensive line that season. Many believed Wisner would struggle to have success against this year's Oklahoma defense, and to a degree he did.
Much of Wisner's 94-yard, 22 carry performance was frustrating particularly in the first half. But rushing opportunities broke for Wisner they were unmistakable.
Texas and Wisner used Outside Zone to punish overly eager Oklahoma defenders. It did so over and over again in the second half, as momentum started to roll. By the game's end, the Longhorns outscored the Sooners 20-0 in the second half.
The Longhorns' key play provides the blueprint to running on the Sooners. It gives other Oklahoma opponents an opportunity to take down the Texas' rivals.
The play still helps an ailing Texas offense, too. A week prior to the Longhorns' running backs combined for 15 yards rushing on 11 carries against Florida. Now the team has a play it can lean on to move the chains and get explosive runs. And, until proven otherwise, it has a play in its back pocket to go back to against Venables, who has yet to stop Outside Zone consistently against the Texas offense in several tries.
Texas won on Saturday, but it also dealt a potential long-term blow to its rival by reminding Oklahoma opponents of a run scheme that can have success against the Sooners. The Longhorns will look to build on the win when they face Kentucky next week.
