The Gators have hired Jon Sumrall of Tulane.

Despite being linked to the job earlier this week, University of Washington football coach Jedd Fisch will not be taking the head coaching job at the University of Florida.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Gators are hiring Jon Sumrall of Tulane, who just led the Green Wave to the American Athletic Conference title game.

Sources: Florida is finalizing a six-year deal to make Tulane’s Jon Sumrall the head coach at an average of nearly $7.5 million per year, with significant incentives tied to the College Football Playoff. Sumrall is 42-11 in four seasons as a head coach.

The rumors of Fisch to Gainesville intensified around the Thanksgiving holiday as Florida pivoted off Lane Kiffin, who is expected to take the head coaching job at LSU or remain at Ole Miss.

Fisch is a University of Florida product and got his first coaching job there.

    Other options for Fisch

Of course, Fisch can remain at Washington, where he just finished up his second regular season, going 8-4.

If he desires to leave, there's the potential of the Ole Miss job, if Kiffin leaves. Should Kiffin stay, LSU will be open. The Penn State job is still open.

    About the Huskies

Washington wrapped up its regular season with a 26-14 loss against No. 6 Oregon on Saturday afternoon. Our own Teren Kowatsch wrote the game story, which you can find here.

They've earned another bowl game-bid but won't learn their bowl game fate for a few days now.

Should Fisch stay at U-W, he'll have a chance to compete next year in the Big 10, especially as quarterback Demond Williams Jr. returns for his junior year. He threw for 2,850 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season, vs. eight interceptions.

Also a viable runner, he gained 595 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

    Also on campus

After falling in the Acrisure Holiday Classic final on Friday, the University of Washington men's basketball team is now 5-2. They'll kick off Big 10 play on Wednesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena when they take on UCLA at 8:00 p.m. PT.

The Washington women are 7-0 on the young season and are nationally ranked at No. 22 in the most recent poll. They will play San Jose State in the final game of a five-game homestand on Monday night with tip-off at 6:00 p.m. PT.
