The University of Washington men's basketball kicks off Big 10 play on Wednesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena against UCLA, who is receiving votes in the latest AP Men's Top 25 poll.
The Huskies are 5-2 after losing in the final of the Acrisure Holiday Classic against Colorado on Friday afternoon.
As Washington looks to pull a big early-season victory, it looks like they'll have a special guest on hand: Humpy the Salmon.
This will mark the Seattle Mariners-themed legend to join Washington Athletics in the last few days, as catcher Cal Raleigh was there on Saturday as the Huskies football team battled No. 6 Oregon in the regular season finale.
One of the "Salmon Run" participants at each M's home game, Humpy is beloved by fans. However he's not very successful, having not won a regular season race in two years of competition.
But he does have some playoff wins under his belt, as Humpy finally cracked the win column in Game 5 of the American League Division Series, winning before the Top of the 15th inning as the M's defeated the Detroit Tigers in the bottom half.
Per the Mariners website:
And our final fish, although we aren’t sure that it can swim.
We’re excited to introduce you to the loveable “humpy salmon”
The Washington women are 7-0 on the young season and are nationally ranked at No. 22 in the most recent poll. They will play San Jose State in the final game of a five-game homestand on Monday night with tip-off at 6:00 p.m. PT.
Our own Teren Kowatsch will be covering that game in person and you can follow him on social media here.
The Huskies football team finished the regular season at 8-4 after losing to Oregon on Saturday. They are headed for a bowl game, though it's not clear where they'll be playing just yet.
For now, the conversation is about head coach Jedd Fisch and if he'll remain at Washington. Several recent job openings have been filled, with LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Virginia Tech recently filling openings.
UCLA, Penn State and Michigan State are open at the moment, though it's unclear if Fisch is a candidate for those jobs.
