43 Years Later: The Move That Built a Dynasty in Denver

May 2, 2026 4:56 PM

On May 2, 1983, the Denver Broncos made what I’d argue is the most impactful quarterback acquisition in NFL history, trading for the draft rights to John Elway.

Elway, one of the most hyped prospects the league had ever seen, made it clear he didn’t want to play for the Colts, opening the door for Denver to step in and completely change the trajectory of their franchise. What followed wasn’t just success, it was dominance: a Hall of Fame career, iconic late-game comebacks, and back-to-back Super Bowl wins (XXXII & XXXIII).

43 years later, this move still defines what the Broncos are. It wasn’t just a great trade, it set the standard for how a single decision at quarterback can shape an organization for decades.

If you love moments like this as much as I do, be sure to tune in each week to our Broncos Roundtable podcast, where we dive into everything Denver Broncos and the AFC West.
