Quarterback Justin Herbert has been playing MVP-caliber football all season, leading the Los Angeles Chargers to a 5-3 record despite crippling injuries throughout the roster. Herbert has faced tremendous pressure from opposing defenses, yet he continues to sling the football downfield with precision. With a favorable matchup on Sunday against the 1-6 Tennessee Titans, Herbert should be poised to dismantle their defense.
The Chargers’ offensive line has been far from perfect — or healthy — all season. No quarterback in the NFL has been hit more times than Justin Herbert, yet that hasn’t stopped the franchise signal-caller from looking dominant at times. He currently leads the league in passing yards with 2,140 despite the lack of protection. Herbert has been getting the ball out of his hands quickly and extending plays with his legs — something the league didn’t see much of last season due to lingering injuries.
Not only is Herbert using his cannon of an arm, but he’s also utilizing his legs at a career rate. He’s on pace to shatter his previous rushing numbers this season. Through just eight games, Herbert has racked up 248 rushing yards, averaging a career-high 6.7 yards per carry. As long as the offensive line can keep him upright, Herbert has shown he can destroy defenses in multiple ways.
The Tennessee Titans are far from a defensive juggernaut. They rank near the bottom in most major defensive metrics and are projected to be without several key players. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Titans will be missing Jeffrey Simmons, Arden Key, and Xavier Woods. This is in addition to their top cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who remains on injured reserve, and Roger McCreary, who was recently traded to the Los Angeles Rams. In recent weeks, Herbert has faced several defenses that bring heavy pressure, but the Titans typically do not — which should give Herbert ample time in the pocket to allow his receivers to get open.
The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to improve to 6-3 with what appears to be an underwhelming opponent in the Titans on Sunday. Titans’ quarterback Cam Ward has been unable to propel his team consistently, and his defense hasn’t been much better. While there’s no such thing as an easy win in the NFL, the Bolts should be able to take care of business. If Justin Herbert can take control of the game from start to finish, it’s tough to imagine Cam Ward and the Titans matching his production.
