Despite suffering a brutal loss on the road in week eight, the final score on Sunday was not the main headline for the New York Giants.
During the second quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles, rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a horrific ankle injury while attempting to catch a pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart. The gruesome play forced the Giants’ medical staff to take Skattebo away in a cart, causing fans to feel misery following the contest.
With Skattebo likely out for the rest of the season, according to multiple reports, it’s clear that head coach Brian Daboll will need another running back to fill his void this year.
Before Skattebo took the league by storm and solidified himself as the team’s top running back, Daboll and the rest of the offense heavily relied on former 2024 fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. to handle the work on the ground. In his rookie season, Tracy finished with 839 rushing yards and five touchdowns, while also tallying 38 receptions for 284 yards.
Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, he would see a dramatic shift in playing time this year with the emergence of Skattebo, as Tracy has been limited to just 45 carries for 159 yards through six games played in 2025.
The simple answer to the million-dollar questions surrounding the state of the Giants’ running back room would be for Tracy to pick up where he left off last season. However, it would make sense for New York to be in the market for an additional rusher that complements Tracy’s run style.
Skattebo is a perfect early-down back who began to see some work in the passing game prior to his injury. But with the well-loved rookie out, the Giants do not have a lead back that can act as a placeholder this season. This is an important key for the franchise, as the current offense already lacks a great supporting cast around its rookie quarterback.
In order for general manager Joe Scheon to help Dart for the rest of the season, he must consider adding a “bruiser-back” to aid his offense.
One name to keep in mind is former Cincinnati Bengals running back Zack Moss, who still remains a free agent after he was cut this past offseason. Moss played under Daboll during his time with the Buffalo Bills, which gives him a perfect edge to come in and hit the ground running if he were to sign with New York.
