The Houston Texans are preparing to restructure the contract of star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. as the team looks to create additional salary cap space before the start of the upcoming free agency period.
Stingley signed a three-year, $90 million extension with Houston, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the league at the time.
However, the Texans are now expected to adjust the structure of that deal in order to give the front office more flexibility this offseason.
The restructure would likely involve converting a large portion of Stingley’s $21.595 million base salary into a signing bonus.
By spreading that bonus over the remaining years of his contract, Houston can significantly lower the current $27.1 million cap hit tied to the All-Pro corner for the 2026 season.
