Going into the winter transfer window, Celtic knew that they needed to strengthen their forward ranks. The club had never properly replaced Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah, as they left in back-to-back windows. Add Kelechi Iheanacho's fitness woes to that and they were left with Johnny Kenny leading the line.
To be fair, Kenny did score quite a few goals under the management of Martin O'Neill the first time around. That being said, his finishing has been nowhere near good enough for him to be trusted with the starting number 9 role.
Celtic were linked with quite a few strikers in the winter and eventually ended up bringing in a couple. Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu arrived on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach and SC Freiburg, respectively. Both have already scored for the Hoops.
Are they the long-term answer for Celtic up front though? Or will the club need to dip into the transfer market once again in the summer?
Time shall tell. One striker the club were quite heavily linked with in the winter is Tawanda Maswanhise. He is enjoying a phenomenal season with Motherwell and is the top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership with 13 goals to his name, one ahead of Celtic's Benjamin Nygren. Overall, he has scored 18 goals in 30 games across all competitions.
Celtic were not able to sign Maswanhise in the winter. But it looks like their chances of bringing him to Parkhead in the summer might have just been handed a boost.
According to Football Insider, Motherwell will “listen to offers” for Maswanhise this summer amid interest from both Celtic and Rangers.
If Celtic do indeed want to sign the Zimbabwean international in the summer window, they might need to break the transfer record between two Scottish clubs. Right now, that is the £4.4 million fee the Hoops had paid Hibernian to sign Scott Brown almost a couple of decades ago.
Considering how much the game has changed since 2007, it is remarkable that the record has stood the test of time. Sooner or later, it will be broken though. Let's see if that involves Celtic once again.
Maswanhise has been superb this season. In fact, the numbers are even more impressive when you consider that he has played a lot of those 30 games on the flank.
On top of his game, many view Maswanhise as the most exciting player in the entire Premiership. If Celtic are able to sign him, it would have to be considered as a major coup for the Hoops.
