Barcelona eyes Chelsea's Disasi amid defensive woes. A quality solution, but a steep price tag and salary could thwart the move.
Among the list of names of possible candidates to reinforce Barcelona's defense in the next transfer market, an option has been added in recent hours that, despite the player's quality, seems very unlikely to be viable for Barca. SPORT already reported that the name of Chelsea's Axel Disasi was an option to leave in the upcoming winter market, similar to City's Ake.
Disasi would be an option for Barca to rebuild its roster of central defenders, following the injury to Andreas Christensen, a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee that will leave the Dane sidelined for many months.
Hansi Flick hopes to recover Ronald Araujo when training resumes on Dec. 29, but the Uruguayan will need time to regain his competitive level after the weeks of absence, and he has Pau Cubarsi and the versatile Eric Garcia. He has also converted Gerard Martin, who usually operates as a left-back, into a center-back.
Despite everything, at Barca, they are aware that when the decisive phase of the season arrives, they may still miss a player like Inigo Martinez. The gap left in the squad last summer, and his absence in the heart of the defense has been very noticeable.
Various alternatives have been considered as possible reinforcements for Barca's defense, such as Bournemouth center-back Marcos Senesi. Now, Axel Disasi is added to the list. He could be a good option from a sporting perspective, but he poses a serious economic problem. Disasi is a physically very powerful central defender who also has speed and good ball control.
Disasi is openly at odds with Chelsea manager Maresca, who does not count on him. Last season, he ended up on loan to Aston Villa for the second half of the campaign, and currently still has no playing time. Therefore, the idea of the 'Blues' is for the player, under contract until June 30, 2029, to be sold.
Barca, which is still awaiting the 'OK' from LaLiga from the perspective of Financial Fair Play to return to the 1:1 rule, could hardly undertake a similar operation, and even a loan, considering Disasi's high salary.
At 27 years old, Disasi could be a solution for the Blaugrana's defensive core in the short and medium term, as currently only two pure center-backs are available, the aforementioned Cubarsi and Eric. Flick is aware that he needs one more defender for that position, even with the return of captain Ronald Araujo, who is expected to be available in early January.
The derby against Espanyol and the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Club will test Barca at the start of January, and how those matches go could accelerate or delay winter market plans, although Barca, in principle, wants to be prudent and will only make a move if it secures a reinforcement that fits Flick's needs but also falls within the club's economic framework. Sporting director Deco will operate under these parameters.
