Moises Caicedo saved Chelsea with a late goal to win 1-0 against Pafos and keep their hopes of advancing in the Champions League alive.
The pattern of the match was clear from the first minute, with Liam Rosenior's team dominating Pafos's half of the field, but unable to find a way to break the deadlock. Moises Caicedo was denied twice by Gorter's saves, while Jorrel Hato also saw his shot frustrated by the Dutch goalkeeper. Reece James and Benoit Badiashile came close with their shots, and Enzo Fernandez had a header disallowed for a foul.
Pafos could hardly get out of their own half, though they came close to scoring in the first half when winger Jaja saw his shot hit the post after a deflection off Reece James.
Rosenior reacted at halftime with the introduction of the young Estevao, whose volley forced Gorter into a great save at the start of the second half. Caicedo was again stopped by the goalkeeper, and Derrick Luckassen saved at the last second an attempt by Alejandro Garnacho.
Just when it seemed Chelsea was running out of ideas, Caicedo reacted faster than anyone to head the ball over the line after a deflection off a Pafos defender from a corner, giving the Stamford Bridge team the victory.
Filip Jorgensen (6/10):
Showed good composure to handle a dubious back pass from Gusto in his only real action of the first half. Still, he suffered an injury that forced him off at halftime.
Malo Gusto (6/10):
Went up and down the right side all night and also cut inside at times. However, he struggled to create anything notable.
Wesley Fofana (6/10):
Spent most of his night inside Pafos's half playing sideways passes while Chelsea looked for a way through. He didn't have to do much defending.
Benoit Badiashile (6/10):
Needed time to adjust his passing radar early on. He headed a good chance wide in the first half, while his spectacular backheel almost allowed Estevao to open the scoring after the break.
Jorrel Hato (5/10):
Showed good defensive instincts at times, but the Blues needed more from him in attack. Should have done better when he shot straight at Gorter late in the first half.
Reece James (6/10):
Shot an early attempt wide, and while his corners caused problems, some of his free kicks into the box were disappointing. Replaced by Estevao at halftime when Rosenior sought to add more attacking spark.
Moises Caicedo (8/10, MVP):
Controlled the game in the center of the field and pressed effectively at times. He was denied three times by Gorter on either side of halftime before finally getting the goal his performance deserved.
Enzo Fernandez (6/10):
Produced a couple of magical moments in the final third but they came to nothing in the end. Had a headed goal disallowed in the first half for a silly push in the back.
Pedro Neto (6/10):
Caused a lot of problems cutting in from the right in the first half, and his crosses didn't always get what they deserved. Less effective after being moved to a central role for the second half.
Liam Delap (4/10):
Could not get into the game in any way. The lack of movement was evident as the Blues struggled to break down their visitors.
Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):
Found himself in a continuous battle with Bruno Felipe all night. Produced a couple of good defensive plays, but perhaps should have scored when Luckassen blocked his shot shortly before being replaced.
