Burnley faces relegation, boasting a surprising recent win and a dangerous winger. Can they repeat their past Stamford Bridge heroics?

After a lesser spotted week off, having avoided the play-off round in the UEFA Champions League, Chelsea are back in action tomorrow, when they host Burnley on match day 27 of the Premier League season.

So, what can we expect from our visitors?

Burnley, who are managed by former Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker, are currently enduring another miserable season in the top flight. The Clarets have picked up just 18 points in the Premier League this season, and are closer in points to bottom place Wolves than they are to safety - with a nine point gap to Nottingham Forest in 17th place.

Their season was compounded last time out, where they lost 2-1 at home to League One side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup fourth round, in what was comfortably the biggest upset of the round.

That said, in the previous game, they pulled off an impressive 3-2 win away to Crystal Palace, coming back from 2-0 down to score three times in just seven first half minutes to go into the break ahead, despite being two goals down after 39 minutes of the game.

Nevertheless, that victory is their only Premier League win since the 26th of October, when they also won 3-2 away to Wolves. In a weird quirk, Jorgen Strand Larsen scored for the home side in both of those games, which happen to be his only three league goals this season.

In terms of who could potentially hurt Chelsea, it is clear that left winger Jaidon Anthony is the key dangerman for the visitors. The 26-year-old has scored six goals - more than 20% of Burnley's total goals - in just 20 starts this season, and found the net in the win over Palace.

At the end of the winter transfer window, Burnley confirmed the loan signing of James Ward-Prowse from West Ham United. The 31-year old is one Premier League free-kick away from equalling David Beckham's competition record - yet has not scored one in three years.

Suppose you're thinking that free-kick was the one away to Chelsea, just over three years ago to the day. You'd be spot on. Indeed, he scored the only goal of the game against Graham Potter's Chelsea on the 18th of February 2023, for a Southampton team that finished bottom with 25 points. So it would be typical for him to do the same thing tomorrow.

The last time this fixture was played, Burnley managed to come away from Stamford Bridge with a 2-2 draw, so you can never be too sure. There are never any foregone conclusions in this league, the midweek Premier League game showed us that very well. Let's see.
